Jaitapur villagers to boycott Republic Day

Last Updated 13 January 2012, 19:03 IST

Villagers protesting against the setting up of Jaitapur Nuclear Power project, in the green ribbon called Konkan, will be courting arrest January 24 onwards thus culminating in the boycott of the Republic Day flag hoisting in a gram panchayat.

Konkan Vinashkari Prakalp Virodhi Samiti office-bearer Satyajit Chavan said here that on Sunday, villagers residing in Jaitapur in a mock ceremony will “take out a funeral of a replica of the proposed power plant and bury it.”

In a meet organised here jointly by Konkan conservationists and Greenpeace activists, well-known seismologist Prof Roger Bilham spoke about the dangers of setting up of nuclear power plant in earthquake prone regions.

“Without challenging the notion that nuclear power stations can be engineered to withstand a high degree of shaking intensity, it is important to remember that the high stresses which are believed to be responsible for the thrust faulting that produced Latur earthquake is also probably responsible for the faulting in the Koyna region and Jaitapur region; no amount of engineering can help in that.
