BMW recalls 89,000 Minis

German automaker BMW is recalling nearly 89,000 Mini Coopers, US traffic safety agency announced, citing threat of a smoldering circuit board that could set cars on fire.

“The electric auxiliary water pump that cools the turbocharger has an electronic circuit board that can malfunction and overheat,” National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

The recall affects various models of Mini roadsters built from November 2006 to January 2011, including Cooper S, Cooper S Countryman, and Cooper JCW convertible. BMW said beginning in February, dealers will replace the water pumps for free.
