BJP demands White Paper on EWS' houses

Terming the decision of the Delhi government to provide pucca houses to people under economically weaker section (EWS) as an election stunt, principal opposition BJP has demanded the state government to come out with a White Paper on the issue.

“The promise of the government is an election stunt. The government is talking about allotting 13,700 flats by March, 2012, whereas by the second week of February, the Model Code of Conduct will come into force for MCD elections. The government will not be able to allot houses to the poor after the code of conduct comes into force. The government is well aware of it, but it is trying to mislead the people,” said Vijender Gupta, president, Delhi BJP.

In the Cabinet meeting on Monday, the Delhi Government decided that the houses under Rajiv Ratan Aawas Yojna will be allotted by March this year.  As per the decision, the dwellers belonging to Scheduled Caste in the J J colonies will be provided houses free of cost.

The SC, ST, Minority Welfare department will bear the cost of initial deposit required from these categories.

The government has also decided to extend the cut-off date for eligibility under Rajiv Ratan Aawas Yojna from December 31, 2002 to December 31, 2007. On this basis, people who became residents up to 2007, will be eligible for allotment of houses.

The BJP has also raised questions over implementation of the scheme. The party has asked the state government whether they have conducted any survey of EWS eligible under the housing scheme apart from having the exact data of the poor in Delhi.
