In search of lady luck

Wishful Thinking

Many people believe that luck plays an important part in their lives.

They think whatever happens in their life is not really in their control but pre-determined by destiny.

But there are also those who say fortune favours only when there is human effort. Pooja A, an engineering student, feels that when there is no effort from a person’s side, he or she starts counting on the luck factor.

“Luck can play a major role sometimes. We want luck to be on our side when our answer scripts are being evaluated. Even after writing the exams well, we may fail to excel in them. If the paper is being checked by a very strict examiner, or the examiner’s mood is bad while assessing the paper, there are chances of getting less marks. If we are lucky enough, we will get a good teacher to evaluate our answer scripts,” she says.

She believes the combination of hard work and luck is essential to achieve success.

“No one can be lucky all the time. We have to put in a lot of hard work. I feel lucky when I get questions from what I have studied during exams,” she smiles.

According to Ajith Sharma, another student, luck is ‘being at the right place, at the right time’. “Luck provides only the opportunity to do things. We need to have enough talent and put in hard work to achieve success.

Apart from that, one must identify his or her strength and work in that area. Cribbing about bad luck without working hard is of no use,” he adds.

“It’s all about our approach towards life,” says Suresh, a software professional. “Whatever you pay attention to grows in your mind. One has to realise that the luckiest people in the world are those who have the extraordinary ability to persist in the face of adversity,” he adds. The determination and effort to push forward in spite of the obstacles on the way can lead a person to an array of opportunities. “Without waiting for luck to favour, one has to do his work and leave the results to God,” Suresh concludes.
