Irrelevant literature dividing society: Moily

Last Updated 22 January 2012, 19:19 IST

Many writers had been writing “irrelevant” literature thus dividing society, according to Union Corporate Affairs Minister M Veerappa Moily.

Speaking at a function to felicitate Jnanpith award winning Kannada litterateur Chandrashekhar Kambar here on Sunday, Moily said such literature was shortlived and failed to give significant message to the literary world. Moily said Kambar had been giving a ‘folk touch’ to his writing while confronting modernity in the most significant manner.

Replying to the felicitation, Kambar said he had always tried to convey a good message to society through his writings.

“Folklore is the best way to reach common man, especially the illiterate,” he said.
Karnataka Sangha, in association with Central Sahitya Akademi, had organised a two-day seminar on noted writer late Gowrish Kaikini on his birth centenary.

Speakers at the event paid glowing tributes to Kaikini, saying that he was one of the trendsetters in modern literary world. Kaikini, who used to write in four languages - Kannada, English, Konkani and Marathi - always remained humble despite his voluminous knowledge on various issues, noted literary critic C N Ramachandran said.

The celebrated writer had touched all sections of the literary world including critiques, poetry and novels evoking immense response, he recalled.

Central Sahitya Akademi Kannada Advisory Board member K Marulasiddappa said Kaikini remained an atheist till his death despite hailing from Gokarna in Uttar Kannada, considered a holy place.

Despite being born in a conservative family, Kaikini was a progressive both in his thoughts and as well as his actions, he said.
