Hybrid bus to hit City roads in a month

Last Updated 23 January 2012, 19:26 IST

The hybrid bus manufactured by Volvo is likely to hit the City roads in a month’s time on a trial basis. The Transport Department has finalised the pilot project, according to Minister R Ashoka.

“The government will not pay anything to Volvo. However, the passengers will be charged for tickets,” Ashoka told reporters here on Monday.

Unlike in conventional buses, the fuel in hybrid vehicles is converted into electrical energy which ignites the engine. The battery-operated vehicle is more eco-friendly and fuel efficient.

Volvo proposal aside, the BMTC has placed orders to procure two hybrid buses from Ashok Leyland at a cost of Rs 1.15 crore each. The vehicles are likely to be delivered by May, said BMTC Managing Director K R Srinivas. The buses are 14 metre in length, two metre more than the conventional vehicles. It would be difficult to ply them in the City.
