Police open fire on Tibetans in China, one dead: group

Last Updated 23 January 2012, 14:41 IST

Police opened fire on Tibetan protesters in China today, killing at least one person and injuring scores of others, a rights group and the Tibetan government-in-exile said.

Citing eye witnesses, Free Tibet and the government-in-exile -- based in India -- said the protest happened in Sichuan province, adding the situation was still very tense in the area.

According to the London-based Free Tibet, the protest began in response to the arrest of
Tibetans earlier today over pamphlets that were distributed in the area calling for freedom in the region.

The group said the protest was ongoing today evening and Tibetans from different areas were reported to be travelling to join the demonstration.

The unrest comes after at least four Tibetans have self-immolated this year to protest against perceived religious repression.
