Two unidentified men allegedly abducted a businessman early Tuesday morning and robbed Rs two lakh in cash and 21 kg of silver ornaments from him, and fled.

According to the Halasuru Gate police, Gopinath, a Salem-based jeweller, often visited Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai to sell ornaments in wholesale.

After a trip to Hyderabad, he left for Salem in a private bus via Bangalore.

Two unidentified men on a bike, intercepted the bus at K R Circle around 5:30 am on Tuesday. They got into the bus, introducing themselves as officers of the anti-corruption branch.

They walked up to the last row where Gopinath was seated and directed him to get off the bus for “questioning”.

Gopinath got down with his luggage. Soon, a car arrived at the spot and the duo pushed him into it.

They beat him up, snatched cash and silver, forced him out of the car on the City Market flyover and escaped, police said.
