Protests against Bangladesh extra-judicial killings

"Sixty-one people were killed till Aug 28 after the assumption of office by the Awami League-led alliance government Jan 6," New Age newspaper said Saturday.

The victims include leaders and activists of Purba Banglar Communist Party (Janajuddha), Gana Mukti Fouz and Biplabi Communist Party (Red Flag).
Among the dead were workers of the country's readymade garment workers, Dhaka Polytechnic Institute students and suspected criminals.

The law enforcers, especially 10 personnel of the Rapid Action Battalion, were sued in connection with the killing of two Polytechnic students May 27.

The Daily Star Saturday reported on the drive against Left extremists in south-western districts - Jessore, Kushtia and Khulna, all bordering India's West Bengal state.

Extra-judicial killing in Bangladesh has drawn widespread criticism from national and international rights organisations.
