Hundreds of CPM activists stage stir against 'pankti bheda'

The practice is not only inhuman, but also against Indian Constitution

Hundreds of CPI(M) activists coming from various districts across the State courted arrest after they forcibly tried to enter into main Car Street to protest in front of Sri Krishna temple against “Pankti Bheda” (separate meal arrangement for non Brahmins) practiced in various temples in the State including Sri Krishna mutt.

After the public protest meeting at Ajjarkadu grounds, the activists under the leadership of State CPI (M) secretariat members Sri Rama Reddy and G Nagaraj took out a procession to make a forced entry into the main Car Street to hold protest in front of the temple. However, their bid to enter Car Street was foiled by the police who erected barricade near Padupet, the entrance point from western side. All the activists were arrested by the police who were later released.

Earlier, addressing the protest rally held at Ajjarkadu, the leaders from state CPI(M) condemned the practice of ‘Pankti Bheda’ based on caste system still prevailing in nearly 250 temples in the State.

They also condemned inhuman practice of ‘Made Snana,’ a social stigma, practiced in several other temples including Kukke Subramanya temple in Dakshina Kannada. They demanded that these ill practices should be immediately banned and equality should be maintained through social justice. All human beings are equal in the eyes of God. But casteism is still practised in the society which is supported and patronised by politicians and Matadhipathis for their gains, they alleged.

Speaking on the occasion, Reddy informed that the CPI (M) at its recent 20th state convention had strongly condemned both ‘Pankti Bheda’ and ‘Made Snana’ and decided to hold state-wide agitation against this ill practice at Udupi today. These ill practices were nothing but discrimination and atrocities on people of other than Brahmin community in the name of caste which is against the Constitution and not agreeable in the civil society, he added. He also defied that if Pejawar mutt seer Sri Vishweshatheertha  Swamiji is really concerned who is publicly stating that he is against Pankti Bheda and practice of Made Snana should become a role model by eating with Dalits and other caste people instead of mere visiting Dalit colonies and accepting ‘Pada Kanike’ from them for cheap publicity.

Nagaraj demanded that Pejawar Seer should give ‘Sahapankti’ (eating opportunity to other caste people along with Brahmins) and those Brahmins who oppose should be banned. The practice of this inhuman system is not only against the Indian Constitution, but also illegal, he added.
