Tihar inmate dies, kin claim foul play

Last Updated 30 January 2012, 20:20 IST

An undertrial lodged at the Tihar Jail died under mysterious circumstances on Sunday. His relatives, however, claim that he did not die a natural death and was possibly murdered, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Naeem, 25, who had been in jail for the past two-and-a-half years, in a case of fighting. His relatives staged a protest at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital in Hari Nagar and at Jahangirpuri on Monday, claiming that the jail authorities were to be blamed for the death.

“On Saturday, Naeem had a trial of his case at the Tis Hazari court. He was fine that day and did not complain of any illness. On Monday we were informed by jail authorities that he had died on Sunday night,” said Naeem’s brother.

A police official said Naeem’s family went to Tihar Jail and then to DDU hospital where the post-mortem was conducted. The body was then handed over to them.

“Naeem’s brother believes  the jail authorities are involved in foul play as there were cut marks on his neck and head. The cause of the death can only be revealed through the post-mortem report,” the official added.

A case has been registered against Tihar Jail authorities following a complaint by the deceased’s family, but Tihar Jail authorities deny the allegations.
