Few days before the Assembly election in Uttar Pradesh, Congress leader Digvijay Singh has come under attack from UPA ally, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), for raking up the Batla House encounter issue.

A senior NCP leader, who does not want to be identified, told Deccan Herald that “Singh should avoid politicising issues like Batla House. It sends a wrong message at the time election and it will not benefit Congress.”

Another coalition partner of the UPA - Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) also asked the government and the Congress to come on the same page on the issue.

"If Congress and government have differences over Batla House case, what can I say...it would be better if the differences end. Congress is also part of the government," Ajit Singh, chief of RLD told reporters here.

Ajit Singh was asked to comment on the differences between Congress and the government on the issue and its possible fallout on the alliance's effort in getting minority votes.

In the controversial Batla House shootout, that took place on September 19, 2008 in Delhi, two alleged Indian Mujahideen members, belonging to Azamgarh district in UP and one police officer were killed. Digvijay Singh, who is Congress in-charge of UP while addressing the media in Azamagarh said that the encounter was “fake.”
