Women duped by 'e-mahile scheme'

Last Updated 31 January 2012, 18:30 IST

Nearly 108 candidates registered themselves under the e-mahile scheme run by Karnataka State Women Development Board in association with Yashasvini Urban and Rural   Parishat an NGO of Davangere. But to their dismay, the scheme with the plans to empower women with e-knowledge turned out to be a hoax. As a result they have lost their money.

Addressing a press meet here on Monday, Bhavya from Varkodu of Mysore, also a victim of the scheme, alleged that Rs 1,80,000 has been paid to the NGO in the form of demand draft. Rs 1,45,000 is the loan amount taken in the bank by the candidates themselves for which the NGO was responsible of clearing.

Now they neither have the amount to pay back the loan nor the e-mahile scheme has been implemented in the centres proposed.

Repay

Meanwhile, the bank is forcing candidates and guarantors to repay the amount, she alleged.
The computers and other items given by the NGO, which it claims have been bought from a shop, does not exist at all, she said.

The materials that have been issued are not in good condition. Two of the victims in Belgaum have ended their lives because of the issue.

Poison

Rachaiah, husband of Veena, a e-mahile, had consumed poison but later was saved. Many of the families are facing severe problems but the NGO and other authorities are not even having a look at the issue, she said. The candidates have brought  the matter to the notice of C C Patil of women and child welfare department and even chief minister but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.
Their urge to the Government is to waive the loans, she said.
