Last Updated 31 January 2012, 20:36 IST

Secretary of Urban Development department (Government of Delhi), R K Srivastava will take over as the director of municipal affairs.

According to a government official, the notification in this regard has been issued.

With the trifurcation of present MCD into three new municipalities, Srivastava's new assignment will be to co-ordinate between the three municipalities and to oversee the division of MCD finances, resources and employees into three parts.

The appointment of Srivastava, a 1984 batch IAS officer of AGMUT cadre, is likely to expedite the process of splitting the  MCD and to set things in motion before the expected April elections to the three municipalities.

While Principal Secretary (Urban Development) R Chandramohan was being seen as the front runner, Srivastava got a nod after the former showed disinterest in the new assignment.

The new director will also co-ordinate with Delhi Finance Commission and K Dharamrajan Committee which is redrafting the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act 1974.

“It will take at least six months to one year to streamline the functioning of the three new corporations and with the appointment of Director, the stage is set for the smooth transition,” said a Delhi government official.
