Falak's condition worsens, survival chances low

Last Updated 01 February 2012, 21:29 IST

The condition of two-year-old Falak, who is battling for life, has further deteriorated with the doctors detecting a blood infection in her apart from the existing infection in chest and brain.

Dr Deepak Aggarwal said her condition still remained critical as it was yesterday. He said antibiotics would be given to her for blood infection.

Senior doctors said her chances of survival have reduced drastically with this new infection coming to light. They have put a lumbar drain, a tube in the child’s spine to drain out the infected fluid.

"It was done around 1 am and the brain fluid has been successfully drained. We will examine the culture report of the fluid and see if the bacterial infection can be brought down through antibiotics,” said Dr Aggarwal, neurologist at the AIIMS Trauma Centre.

It has been 13 days since Falak was brought to the Trauma Centre by a teenaged girl. The baby had multiple injuries with her skull fractured, left arm broken and marks of human bite on her body.

Condition of her health has been fluctuating since then. She was put on ventilator as soon as she came to the Trauma Centre. With a gap of two days after a week, she had to be put on ventilator again.

She is still deep coma and has gone through two brain surgeries.

Five days ago, the doctors had begun to see some hope, especially keeping in mind that a young children have remarkable capability to recover. However, the infection in blood has made doctors worried.
