Opposition seeks debate on mining report

Last Updated 01 February 2012, 19:32 IST

The Opposition Congress in the Legislative Council sought to put the ruling BJP government on the mat by seeking to move an adjournment motion on the delay in action on the recommendations made by the Lokayukta in its report on illegal mining.

The members had made a submission for adjournment motion against the State government to discuss the mining report and the action taken against individuals indicted in the report.

Leader of the Opposition Motamma raised the matter seeking to move an adjournment motion alleging that the government had been sitting on the report which recommended action against elected representatives and over 700 officials involved in illegal mining.

The discussion led to a commotion when the name of a former chief minister who was indicted in the Lokayukta report was mentioned.

Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, in his reply, said the report cannot be discussed under Rule 59 as the report has been sent back to Lokayukta seeking certain clarifications. When the Chairperson refused to allow a discussion, the Opposition members staged a dharna in the well of the House. Later, the Chairperson promised them to allow the discussion in some other form.
