Sibal meets PM, Mukherjee to discuss 2G verdict

Last Updated 02 February 2012, 10:40 IST

Soon after the Supreme Court's verdict Thursday cancelling 2G licences to telecom firms, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal went in an overdrive trying to ascertain how to salvage the situation for the government.

Sibal met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to discuss the government's plan of action.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, a visibly tense telecom minister said the judgment was not an indictment of the prime minister or the then Finance Minister P. Chidambaram.

"The prime minister was in no way responsible, neither the then finance minister was responsible for the irregularities,” Sibal  said.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in his response said the government would examine the verdict.

“You know the Supreme Court judgment has come. We have to examine the judgement and its implications. The government will examine it,” Mukherjee told reporters.

The Supreme Court Thursday cancelled all 122 licences issued to telecom firms in 2008.
However, the apex court has given four months' time to the telecom regulator to look into the matter and make recommendations for the fresh auctions.
