Rahul campaigns in UP alongside RLD

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Thursday sought to woo the electorate at his first joint election rally with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) at Meerut by reminding the people about the independence struggle that resulted in ouster of the Britishers and urged them to similarly oust the BSP regime.

The election rally in which RLD chief Ajit Singh and his MP son Jayant Chaudhary were present, witnessed a good turn out in the ‘jatland’ and also saw Rahul hitting out at Mayawati in an aggressive tone.

“Mayawati terms my visits to the villages and having food with the dalits and poor as drama....if it is drama what is looting the MNREGS and NRHM funds”, Rahul asked, accusing the BSP regime of siphoning off funds meant for developmental schemes.

He also referred to the “forced land acquisitions” in various parts of the state and sought to blame Mayawati for the killings of farmers in clashes during the protest demonstrations by the farmers.

“Mayawati should have visited Tappal and Bhatta-Parsaul to see the destruction there...the farmers who protested were killed but the chief minister remained silent”, he said.

Rahul said that the Congress-RLD alliance, if voted to power, would transform Uttar Pradesh in a span of five years. “We have changed many states in the country and now it is the turn of UP,” he said.
