Playground row: Court grants interim injunction

The Clarence High School has said that it has obtained an interim injunction from the City Civil Court with regard to the dispute over the playground that was granted to them on ‘perpetual lease’ by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike in Cox Town.

In a press release on Thursday, it said that the court has given the order “against trespassers, restraining them from interfering with the school’s possession and enjoyment of the playground.”

Earlier, a row over the playground space that was on ‘perpetual lease’ to the 98-year-old school had resulted in a tug-of-war between the residents around Wheeler Road and the school.

On January 24, members of the Bharathi Nagar Residents’ Forum, Cox Town Residents’ Forum and Student Union Football Club staged a demonstration at the playground demanding that the local residents be allowed to use the ground. BBMP had stated that it was planning to “withdraw the land” from the school to facilitate road widening.

The playground, measuring 2.56 acres, was leased out to the school in 1945 at 50 paise per annum.
