Parents picket school

Last Updated 03 February 2012, 18:25 IST

Following an allegation that one of the teachers of Shettikoppa Government Higher Primary School has been physically harassing female students, the parents picketed the school building on Friday.

It is said that about a month ago, one of the teachers was given in-charge of one of the batch of students during an educational tour. It is alleged that this teacher had misbehaved with female students.

Since the said teacher has been working in the same school since several years, the villagers and parents had great respect for him, which made them disbelieve what the students said.

When about 14 students complained about the same, the parents held a meeting with the villagers on Friday and decided to picket the school. They demanded legal action against the teacher.

When the situation in the school turned tense, the police and education department officials came to the spot and tried to hold dialogue with the parents.

Later a meeting was held by education department officials and leaders of the village. Since the Block Education Officer is not in station and since the teacher in question too has gone for training, it was decided to continue the meet on Saturday.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Block Education Officer H Manjunath said that on Saturday a meeting will be convened with the parents and the students and suitable action will be taken.

There are 180 students in the school and seven teachers teaching them.
