A Delhi court sentenced a youth to seven years in jail  term for robbing an auto driver of Rs 270 and a cell phone.  He was also slapped a fine of Rs 60,000 on him.

Additional Sessions Judge S S Rathi observed that incidents of robbing and snatching have reached a ‘pinnacle’ in the city and the culprits do not deserve any leniency.

He then awarded 22-year-old, Rohit, a street vendor, stringent punishment.

“Incidents of armed robberies and snatching in Delhi are showing an upward curve and have reached pinnacle lately.

“Despite active patrolling and vigilant policing, law breakers like Rohit never leave any opportunity to strike the hapless citizens. Such convicts do not deserve any leniency," said Rathi.

Rohit was convicted for robbing an auto driver after hiring his vehicle on May 29, last year.

The judge stipulated that if the fine is recovered from Rohit, Rs 40,000 would be paid to the auto driver as a token of compensation.

According to the police, when auto driver Kumar was going towards ITO, Rohit and one of his accomplices stopped his auto and asked him to go towards Tilak Bridge.

They robbed Kumar on the way of Rs 270, his driving licence and a mobile phone at knife point.
