A 31-year-old suspected ideologue of the banned Indian Mujahideen outfit was arrested from Nalanda district of Bihar, police said on Friday. This is the eight arrest made by Delhi Police’s Special team from across the country.

Accused Mohammad Tariq Anjum Hussain, a member of banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and active Indian Mujahideen member, was arrested on Thursday following a trail for the last few months, deputy commissioner of police (crime) Ashok Chand told Deccan Herald.

Hussain had joined SIMI in 1998 in Bihar at a very young age. He was motivated by regular meetings held by the organisation. He went to Anjuman Engineering College at Bhatkal in Karnataka and completed his BTech course in civil branch.

During this period, he came in touch with the members of Indian Mujahideen and became a core associate of Bhatkal brothers -- Riyaz Bhatkal and Iqbal Bhatkal -- who are hiding in Karachi, Pakistan. He is a core member of the outfit along with Ahmed Siddi Bappa alias Shahrukh, who carries a reward of Rs 15 lakh on his head, announced by the Delhi Police.

Police said Hussain was the  mastermind behind IM terror operations across India. A senior police officer said it would be too early to say anything about his involvement in various blasts.  “We are still interrogating him,” said the officer.

The investigating officer also hinted at his involvement in money laundering and financing terror activities after getting money through hawala. For the last few years, he has been actively recruiting and motivating new members for the terror outfit across Bihar.
