Hotels to be smoke-free zones

Eateries in Bangalore to be smoke-free zones as the Bruhat Bangalore Hotel Owners Association has decided to ban smoking in hotels.

The Association at an event held as part of the World Cancer Day, announched its decision to create ‘smoke-free zones’ in the City hotels and restaurants, to protect non-smokers from hazards of passive smoking. The initiative will later be extended to other parts of the State as well.

President of the Association Vasudev Adiga said as per the guidelines laid down under the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), placards and signage would be put in prominent places of hotels and restaurants to create awareness among customers. A special smoking zones would be created for the smokers, he added.

As per the rules of the COTPA (revised in 2008), smoking may be permitted in restaurants, bars or pubs with seating capacity of thirty or more persons. But, a separate smoking zone should be created.
