Thousands of students gathered at the Sports Complex of BMS College of Engineering to condole the death of their classmate C S Naveen Kumar, who drowned in a lake at Kabbinale forest in Sakleshpur on Saturday.

After observing silence for two minutes, the lecturers spoke about Naveen Kumar and said his death was a great loss not only to his family but also to the college.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, college principal K Mallikarjuna Babu said it was unfortunate that the college lost one of its bright students.

“Other students should learn from the tragic death of Naveen. The institution will warn students about their wild adventures,” he said.

Babu said that the condolence meeting was not the place to talk to students about safety measure during trekking, but in the coming days, the college management will hold a meeting to educate the students.

However, Naveen’s mother has raised questions about her son’s death. “Naveen could not have ventured into the waters on his own, as he did not know swimming,” she said.

Naveen Kumar, along with 14 other students, had set out on a trekking to Mondat, Kottuchatta Falls, in Kabbinale forests of Sakleshpur last weekend, where he drowned in a lake.
