KSOU: Science Bhavan soon

Facility estimated to come up at a cost of Rs 22 cr

Adding to the increasing facilities keeping pace with the growing demand, Karnataka State Open University (KSOU)  has plans to establish science bhavan at an estimated cost of Rs 22 crore.

This was disclosed on Wednesday by vice-chancellor of the varsity K S Rangappa at the inauguration of three-day faculty development programme for UG teachers on biochemistry. The varsity has organised the workshop in association with Vision Group on Science and Technology and Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI).

The intended project aims to bring all the subjects related to science under one roof. It will help give impetus to teaching of pure science.

The vice chancellor said that expansion in the realm is imminent with the centre releasing more grants to take up research activities. It also opens doors of vast opportunities for the students to study pure science the root of many branches. Referring to online education in science gaining popularity abroad with more students intake, the V-C said it’s time to replicate the same in India too.

The contribution of scientists towards the development of nation is enormous when compared to bureaucrats. Needless to say, innovation helps whole community. As a result, there is increase in number of students opting for research in science rather than civil service aspirants. More reforms should be undertaken to attract students, he added.

Director of CFTRI G Venkateshwara Rao said that the institute offers short-term courses, besides weekly and monthly courses. Students are extended several facilities. Regsitrar of KSOU P Vishwanath, Govindaswamy from Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and dean (academics) S N Vikram Raje Urs were present.
