South Zone moved to a strong position against North Zone to inch closer to capturing the Vizzy Trophy inter-university, inter-zonal crown at the Wankhede stadium on Saturday.

On day three of the four-day final, South gained a handsome first innings lead of 177 runs over their rivals and then reduced North to 280 for seven in second innings for an overall lead of 103 runs.

At stumps, Hemanshu Satyawan (21) and Tarun Sharma (0) were holding fort and with only Nitin Yadav and R Lokendra left to bat, North face a huge task to reverse the first three days’ trend on the final day on Saturday. In the morning, North did well to restrict South to 542 from the overnight 417 for three. Sandeep Rajan made 80. North’s Charanjeet Singh claimed six wickets while Lokendra got the remaining wickets.

Brief scores: North Zone: 365 all out and 280/7 (Rajvinder Singh 48, D Sharya 96, Abhishek 73; A Kazi 2-105, S Daniel 4-105) vs South Zone: 542 all out (K Rohit 109, M Agarwal 235, S Rajan 80, H Shrikant 55; R Lokendra 4-76, Charanjeet Singh 6-119).
