Tractor driver killed in accident

A 38-year-old man was killed on Friday morning when the tractor he was driving was hit by a speeding tempo in Patel Nagar in central Delhi, police said.

The deceased is identified as Jagbahadur Singh, a native of East Champaran in Bihar. The accident took place at around 5 am when Jagbahadur’s tractor, which was ferrying a water tanker, was hit from the rear end by Tata 407 driven by Dukhan Singh, 35, a resident of Hari Nagar.

“Both the vehicles were going towards Karol Bagh when the tempo rammed into the tractor on Patel Road. Jagbahadur was thrown off his vehicle on impact, and died on the spot after the tractor ran over him,” Joginder Singh, Station House Officer of Ranjit Nagar Police Station, told Deccan Herald.
Dukhan and his helper Sakir were also injured in the accident as the impact reduced the front part of the tempo into a mangled heap of metal.
“The duo was rescued after the driver’s cabin was cut open by the fire department personnel using gas cutters. They were later taken to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for treatment,” Singh added.
Dukhan is undergoing treatment for minor injuries, while Sakir was discharged after first-aid. Jagbahadur’s body has been sent for a post-mortem. Sakir told police that they were heading towards Karol Bagh from Mayapuri when the accident took place.

“Sakir denies that Dukhan was speeding. Dukhan’s preliminary medical examination has confirmed that he was not driving under the influence of alcohol,” a senior police official added.

A case has been registered over the accident at Ranjit Nagar Police Station. Dukhan faces charges under sections 304 (of culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 279 (rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police have also located Jagbahadur’s relatives in Todapur. “Jagbahadur’s brother has identified his body. Dukhan will be arrested after he is discharged from the hospital,” the official said.
