Key accused in baby Falak case nabbed

In a major breakthrough in the baby Falak case, key accused Raj Kumar alias Mohammad Dilshad was arrested by the Delhi Police from outside New Delhi railway station on Saturday morning.

Raj Kumar, 32, a taxi driver hailing from Bihar’s Darbhanga district, had left two-year-old Falak, who is battling for life at the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) Trauma Centre since January 18, with his minor girlfriend before heading to Mumbai for the treatment of his physically-challenged son.

Falak had a fractured skull, bruises and human bite marks all over her body when she was brought for treatment.

“Raj Kumar was absconding since the issue was highlighted on January 26. He had been hiding at several cities in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. However, our efforts yielded result, when he was traced to an ATM outside New Delhi Railway Station and was arrested in the early morning hours of Saturday,” Deputy Commissioner of police (South) Chhaya Sharma said. Investigation had earlier revealed that Raj Kumar had bank accounts in HDFC and ICICI banks.
His bank statements were being analysed on a daily basis to keep tabs on any withdrawal of money.

“Staff in plain clothes were also deployed round the clock near his rented apartment in Dwarka Sector-8. Teams were also posted in Mumbai, where he was traced to Sion,” Sharma said.

On sustained interrogation, Raj Kumar told police that he had left Mumbai on January 29 after the media highlighted Falak’s plight and took lift from truck and bus drivers to reach the national capital.

“In between, he stayed for a day or two at Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Ajmer, Kanpur and Ghaziabad,” Sharma added.

Raj Kumar also says that he had offered to keep Falak from his friend Manoj and his wife Pratima on October 13, 2011, after taking the consent of his wife Tabbasum in Delhi and his in-laws in Mumbai.

Manoj and Pratima along with Laxmi, a resident of Uttam Nagar, had convinced Falak’s mother Munni to leave the kid with them.

“Initially Raj Kumar kept the baby at his house in Dwarka. He then brought a 14-year-old minor girl to his residence when his wife left for Mumbai on November 15 to see her ailing son. They stayed there till December 28 and named the baby as Falak,” Sharma said.

Prior to this, Raj Kumar had met the juvenile girl at the house of Rana Kumar Gupta, 28, and his second wife Aarti, 25, at Munirka. The couple, along with an accomplice, Rahul, 26, had pushed the minor girl into flesh trade in the national capital.

“Raj Kumar’s taxis were used by Rana, Aarti and Rahul and others. In the process, he came across the girl and on her request he took her with him to Dwarka. However, upon the return of his wife from Mumbai, he shifted the juvenile girl to one of his acquaintance’s house at Sangam Vihar on December 28,” Sharma added.
He later shifted the girl to a guest house in Mahipalpur on January 13 and left for Mumbai to see his son. He had left Falak in the custody of juvenile.

“Being a minor herself and inexperienced, she could not take care of Falak. She was in continuous contact with Raj Kumar on his mobile phone and once he came to know that the baby was hurt he had advised her to take the child to hospital,” Sharma said, adding that Raj Kumar had no involvement in a human trafficking and prostitution racket being investigated by the Sangar Vihar Police Station.

The police have also arrested Pratima from Patna and are questioning her to trace her husband Manoj.
