Rly staffer's honesty: Kodagu man gets back valuables

Channabasappa found jewellery in a box, informed his supervisor

A contract worker in the cleaning section, he could have easily made away with the windfall with a box full of gold jewellery worth lakhs found abandoned in the train. Instead, he decided to hand over the valuables to the authorities concerned with honesty, a rare gesture nowadays.

Channabasappa, a contract worker in the cleaning section of south western railway is the honest worker.

Sheikh Mohammed, a businessman from Pollibetta in Kodagu district, had boarded Cauvery express — Mysore bound Chennai train — on Saturday night.

He was accompanied by his daughter Nissara and a grandchild. When the train stopped at Mandya on Sunday morning, Sheikh was shocked as a bag missing. The bag had a tiffin box containing jewellery worth Rs nine lakh, Rs 5,000 in cash and a cellphone. He lodged a complaint with the government railway police at Mandya, before resuming his journey towards Mysore.

On the other hand Channabasappa, who was cleaning the Dharwad-Mysore train on platform one came across a tiffin box near the sink in the toilet. Curious he opened the box only to find gold jewellery wrapped in a piece of cloth. He brought the incident to the notice of his supervisor Mahendra. The supervisor conveyed the information to junior engineer Harish Kumar, who eventually informed senior divisional commercial manager Dr Anup Dayanand Sadhu.

As is the procedure, the discovery of jewellery in an abandoned box was brought to the notice of government railway police in Mysore. In a sheer coincidence, hoping for good, Shiekh went to the station to lodge another complaint, to hear that his lost valuables have been traced.

Said a source, the Dharwad train had been stationed on platform one, while Chennai train was standing on the adjacent track. The thief may have travelled up to Mysore, and boarded Dharwad train only to pocket the stolen valuables. While he made away with cash and cellphone, he abandoned the tiffin box, mostly thinking it for consisting food.

As soon as the trains arrive, they are parked in siding (track not in use) to facilitate cleaning and maintenance work. In this case, both the rakes were on the platform, which may have also gone in favour of Sheikh in getting his lost treasure.
