SC notice to Sharma in Shivani murder case

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to dismissed IPS (Indian Police Service) officer R K Sharma on a petition challenging the Delhi High Court’s verdict acquitting him and two others in the journalist, Shivani Bhatnagar, murder case.

A bench of justices Aftab Alam and Ranjana Prakash Desai sought response from Sharma and other accused Sribhagwan and Satya Prakash on the plea made by the Delhi police.

Additional Solicitor General H P Raval submitted that the High Court had torn apart the prosecution case by not considering the telephonic evidence, which indicated that Sharma was in touch with co-accused.

In its appeal, the Delhi Police claimed that there was a clear chain of evidence along with circumstantial proof to indicate close involvement of Sharma and others in the conspiracy to kill the Indian Express journalist in her Navkunj Apartments flat in Patparganj, east Delhi, on January 21, 1999.

The High Court had on October 12 exonerated Sharma, who remained in jail for about 10 years, in the sensational case saying that the evidence in the case was not of “high caliber”.
