Yet another Mulayam kin to join politics

Akhilesh Yadavs wife likely candidate for Ferozabad by-poll

The SP is reportedly toying with the idea of fielding Dimple Yadav, wife of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son and party MP Akhilesh Yadav, for the upcoming bypoll in the Ferozabad Lok Sabha seat.

Dimple, if nominated by the Samajwadi Party, would be the seventh member of Mulayam’s family in active politics and will face Congress candidate and cine actor Raj Babbar among others.

Forced candidature

Although Mulayam was not initially inclined to field Dimple, internal dissension in the local unit and a lack of consensus over candidate selection forced her candidature, SP sources said.

The bypoll was necessitated by Akhilesh’s resignation from the seat. Akhilesh was elected from two seats –– Kannauj and Ferozabad –– in the recent Lok Sabha elections and chose to retain Kannauj.

“The party cannot afford to lose the seat. Our performance in the recent bypolls on four assembly seats was pathetic and another defeat will certainly push the party into a corner in state politics”, quipped a senior SP leader.

“The only way to ensure that the party goes to the bypoll unitedly is to field someone from Mulayam’s family”, he added.

The SP would certainly not want to allow Raj Babbar, the friend-turned-foe of party leader Amar Singh, to take advantage of the infighting in the party rank and file, he added.

The Ferozabad seat has nearly 14.19 lakh voters of which Yadavs account for nearly 3.5 lakh, followed by 1.5 lakh Lodh-Rajput votes.
