Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda will inaugurate the mela at Hopcoms Head Office in Hudson Circle. The fruits will be brought by the farmers of Bijapur, Bagalkot, Koppal, Kolar and Bangalore Rural districts. Grapes will be supplied in boxes weighing two kilograms.
Hopcoms has chosen 23 retail outlet spots across the City where the Mela will be organised.Mango Mela, held during the peak season, receives a great response from consumers and Hopcoms hopes that the Grapes and Watermelon Mela too will achieve similar commercial success.
The venues selected are primarily government and semi-government retail outlets apart from a few private retail premises.
Raisins, cashew, pista and badam will also be sold at the Mela. While grapes have been a regular feature at such melas, for the first time watermelons will be part of the sale. Over the past three years, Hopcoms has sold close to 1,500 tonnes of grapes worth Rs 6.60 crore. This year, it hopes to sell 700 tonnes of grapes.
The mela paves way for direct trade between growers and consumers, apart from providing good price to farmers and fresh fruits at discount rates to consumers.
