Ugrappa skeptical over Speaker's move

Last Updated 15 February 2012, 17:30 IST

Congress Leader V Ugrappa has raised apprehensions over the move of the Assembly Speaker of forming House Committee to hold inquiry into the video clipping issue.Addressing a news conference on Tuesday, Ugrappa said that when the ‘money for question scam’ took place in the Parliament, the then Speaker of Parliament Somnath Chatterjee had executed his powers to disqualify six MPs.

The Assembly Speaker too could have done the same, but instead he continued the session and then announced that the House Committee will be formed to hold inquiry into the issue.“He should have announced the Committee before adjournment itself. It so seems as though the Speaker was buying time to select the people to the committee who would work as per Party’s wishes. It also suggests that he is trying to protect the MLAs,” said Ugrappa demanding immediate action against the tainted ministers from the Speaker. He said that Laxman Savadi himself has said that he has not committed a crime by watching the clipping for two minutes. “This in itself is a confessional statement.

The whole idea of holding Inquiry falls flat,” he said.Citing the instance of the Malpe Rave Party, Ugrappa said that on the one hand, the BJP talks of culture and on the other hand, it has stooped to the level of closing its eyes towards highly condemnable culture which was allowed in the name of tourism development.“They have double standard and in such a case what legal right do they have to continue in power. Let us face the ‘Janadesha’ now,” he challenged the BJP further adding that of the entire Rs 30,000 crore plan size, the BJP has not even achieved 60 per of it over the last four years.Ugrappa said that the root cause for the existing Lokayukta problem is the report of the Lokayukta on the looting of natural resources in the State.

The report states that resources worth Rs 16,085 crore has been looted in the State and all together the State is under an invoice loss of Rs 2,222 crore. The total loss is estimated at Rs 20,000 crore. Under Section 12 of Lokayukta Act, action taken report must be submitted to the Office of the Lokayukta within stipulated time limit, which has not happened so far.He has sought CBI inquiry into the issue, if the CM, B S Yedyurappa and K S Eshwarappa have any respect on democracy.DH News Service
