Hailing Late Dr V S Acharya who died on Tuesday, as a good politician and a human being, Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy said that Dr Acharya was not just a politician, but he was an educational politician.

Sharing his experience with Dr Acharya at the condolence meet organised by Kalkura Foundation at Sharada Vidyalaya on Wednesday, the VC praised Acharya. “In my career, I had never seen any Education Minister talking in person for hours with Vice Chancellor, but Dr Acharya used to do it. Prior to the appointment of the Higher Education Minister for the State, the 20 Vice Chancellors in a meeting wished that we would get a Minister who is non-corrupt, well aware of his portfolio and is easily accessible. Fortunately, we got a Minister who had all three qualities. His death is great loss to the education sector,” said Prof  Shivashankara Murthy.

Speaking about the love of Dr Acharya for his land and people, Karnataka Bank Managing Director P Jayarama Bhat recalled an incident when Dr Acharya paid a surprise attendance to the inauguration of one of the branches of Karnataka Bank. “I had been to Gundlupet for the inauguration of our bank branch and we had invited the local MLA for the inauguration. However, on reaching there, MLA disagreed to come to the programme saying that Dr V S Acharya who was the Home Minister then was visiting Gundlupet. As the helipad was nearby the branch, I went to meet Dr Achrya thinking that I would request him to allow the MLA to attend our programme. To my surprise, Acharya violated the protocol and said that he would like to be the part of the inauguration.

The reason behind him visiting our branch was his love towards Karnataka Bank which he always refereed as “our bank,” said Bhat.

Congress leader Ivan D’Souza said that the political life of Dr Acharya will be role model and guiding force to the youth. VHP senior leader Prof M B Puranik, littérateur Erya Lakshminarayana Alva, Dakshina Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and others too paid their tribute to Dr Acharya.
