Last Updated 18 February 2012, 19:51 IST

Railways on Saturday pitched for regular running of steam locos between tourist destinations to preserve steam heritage and boost tourism.

“The operation of steam locos between Delhi-Alwar and in hill stations can be a tourist attraction and we should work for it,” said Divisional Rail Manager Ashwani Lohani while addressing the National Steam Congress.

Lohani said the railways have recently revived the steam locomotive shed at Rewari where nine steam locos are being exhibited for the public. "Steam loco is the heart of heritage and it is should be revived,” said Railway Board Member Sanjiv Handa.

However, president of Indian Steam Railway Society R C Sethi said there is a shortage of good coal, spare parts and supporting staff.
