Dept officials will visit houses and scrutinise furnish details

The Department of Food and Civil Supplies is taking steps to issue ration cards to those who are applying online. Dakshina Kannada district has received 34,000 applications  online since November 18, 2011.

The ration cards will be issued on first come first basis. In fact, the officials of Food and Civil Supplies have issued a total of 3.7 lakh ration cards, which includes 1.5 lakh for BPL families. Steps were also being taken to provide facility for correction of details mentioned in the ration cards.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Food and Civil Supplies Deputy Director Sharanabasappa said as many as 24 franchisees have been selected in the district to distribute ration cards for those who have applied online. A training programme will be organised for the franchise staff, before starting the drive to distribute ration cards. The department has already signed agreement with the franchises. The franchises have started purchasing web camera and bio-metric equipment required for the distribution of ration cards.

He said the department officials will visit houses of those individuals who have submitted applications for ration cards online shortly. “As we have not collected any documents online, it would be necessary to verify the declaration made by the individuals while applying online. The officials will collect information on number of family members, verify the address proof. Once the officials verify the documents, the franchise will be asked to click the photographs before issuing the ration cards.”

He said in rural areas individuals need to furnish information through the computers of their jurisdictional gram panchayat offices while applying for ration card. Submission of applications for new ration cards can only be made online. Printed or handwritten applications will not be accepted, he added.

Families in possession of ration cards and who have submitted their electricity RR number and their residential property tax number as sought by the department need not apply.Persons applying for ration cards have to furnish information about the place of residence and their family. He said submission of applications through the computer system will facilitate proper submission of data, processing and prompt delivery of ration cards. Once the application is submitted, the applicant will get an acknowledgement via e-mail or SMS.

Mobile phone numbers

To delete the illegal BPL cards in rural areas, it has been made mandatory for the card holders to furnish the details of RR number and  mobile phone number. SMS will be sent to the BPL card holders as soon as the ration is supplied to the ration shops. “The consumers will be given a form in the ration shops in which they have to write the RR number and mobile phone number. As all the godowns in the district are computerised, as soon as the food grains are supplied to the ration shops, SMS alert will be sent to the consumers to avail the ration.”

“We had not collected the electricity meter RR number so far from the BPL card holders in the rural areas. With the RR number, if a card holder was found paying huge electricity bill, then one can come to a conclusion that he is not eligible for BPL card,” said sources in the department.
