Hauz Khas accident delivers double blow to victim's family

The car accident in Hauz Khas area on Monday morning struck a double blow to the family of Sultan Singh. The family is mourning his death and is close to postponing the wedding of his daughter, which was scheduled for later this week.

Sultan, Assistant Vice President at CitiFinancial’s branch in Pushp Vihar, and his friend Raja Ram, 53, were hit by the car of a senior Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official when they were taking an early morning walk on August Kranti Marg.

According to Gulshan Vashisht, a relative of Sultan, the 46-year-old’s daughter, a marketing executive with a media company, was scheduled to get engaged on Monday evening and her wedding was fixed for Friday.

“The engagement has been postponed due to the deaths and we are not sure if the wedding will be organised soon. We had been planning for the ceremonies for the past one year,” Gulshan said.

Raja, who hails from Bangalore in Karnataka, was in the national capital to attend the ceremonies.

The 24-year-old’s marriage was fixed with Kush Kapoor, 27, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.

The Maruti Swift DZire car is registered in the name of Isha Srivastava.

Her husband Kartik Pandey, an Indian Foreign Service officer of the 2004 batch, currently works as Under Secretary in MEA at South Block. Pandey claims that cleaner Manish had taken the car for a joyride without his permission.

"The accident took place at around 6:30 am and the police  registered a case of vehicle theft three hours later. We suspect that the police is trying to cover up the issue due to the involvement of the MEA official,” Gulshan said.

Sultan and Raja’s bodies have been handed over to the family after a post-mortem at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences trauma centre.

While Sultan is survived by his wife and three daughters,  Raja is survived by his wife and two daughters.

They were close friends for the past 20 years.
