Set to sizzle again

UTV Motion Pictures has signed Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan for a mad, quirky comic-thriller titled Ghanchakkar. To be directed by Rajkumar Gupta of ‘No One Killed Jessica’ and Aamir fame, the film is expected to go on the floors in August this year.

Says Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO of UTV Motion Pictures, “With Emraan and Vidya in the lead roles, we have managed to get our dream cast for roles that were virtually written with them in mind.

Rajkumar and Pervez Sheikh have written a fabulous quirky comic-thriller that will surprise the audiences with its many twists and turns. We are confident that this explosive combination of Emraan, Vidya and Rajkumar will take the audience by storm.”

Ghanchakkar narrates the story of an ex-conman named Sanju (Emraan). He is laidback and has a taste for finer things in life. The problem is he has an ambitious wife (Vidya) with her own notions of the world and therefore gets sucked into a chakkar and has to tolerate two thugs in the process — one with a bad ailment and one with a bad sense of humour, leading to madness, confusion and chaos and unleashing some mad cap characters in his life.

After ‘No One Killed Jessica’, this is Vidya Balan’s next with UTV. “As an actor, all you want to do is reach out to the audiences with diverse yet entertaining roles. Having said that, the story, director, co-actors, producers, play an extremely critical role while selecting a film. With Ghanchakkar, it all just fell in place,” she says. “The story is definitely creativity at its best and I can’t think of a better director than Rajkumar Gupta to bring this story to the audiences. He has a very new age and quirky humour. Having worked with him before in ‘No One Killed Jessica’, I know he will push me to give my best. When you have worked with an actor before, there is a certain amount of comfort that is brought to the table. Emraan is a brilliant co-star and together, we hope to rock it.”

Says Emraan, “It’s great to be associated with UTV and Rajkumar Gupta for the very first time. Ghanchakkar is definitely one of the best scripts I’ve heard in recent times and I jumped on board when Rajkumar offered it to me. It’s a brilliant story with comic, thriller, edgy and entertaining elements, which are sure to connect with the audiences. It is undoubtedly going to be a challenging role for me, something that I haven’t attempted before but as an actor, I am always looking forward to push the bar, so I can’t wait to get into the skin of the character. And now to add to the excitement, Vidya and I will be seen on screen together again and am sure, under Rajkumar’s apt direction, we will recreate the magic on screen.”

The film’s music is being done by Amit Trivedi of ‘Dev D’ fame and noted lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya is writing the songs.

For a cause

Mumbai-based fashion designer and stylist Umar Zafar is all set to launch a new designer-line bikini collection.

The collection will be handmade with the designs being inspired by the original crafts and workmanship of the various kingdoms in India including
the Maratha, Mughal and Dravidian kings.

Model Divya Chouksey will promote the cause of Indian crafts and craftsmen by donning the bikini line for a promotional photo shoot.

Divya is the finalist of ‘I Am She’, a beauty pageant organised by former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen.

One Khan for the other

If there’s bitter rivalry in the industry, there are also incidents when an actor is known to favour or promote close friends to everyone.

Apparently Salman Khan has asked ‘Bodyguard’ director Siddique to
cast Aamir Khan in his next Bollywood film.

Salman has even promised Siddique that he will talk to Aamir and make him accept the project.

‘Desi’ flavour

Last year saw an increasingly high number of Hinglish and English film titles. This year however, it’s local parlance that’s promising to be the flavour in Bollywood. And a majority of the films that have released or are all set to release this year have a rustic touch to the titles like Chaalis Chaurasi, Sadda Adda, Tutiya Dil, Gali Gali Chor Hai, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu and Ek Deewana Tha.

Nothing like Indian food!

Actors Madhavan and Bipasha Basu, along with a unit of 75 people, had gone to Greece for the shooting of Jodi Breakers. After a point of time, the crew got tired of eating Greek food and was dying to taste some Indian delicacies.

Finally, 20 young Punjabi boys from the unit came to the rescue. Hailing from Mykonos, a Greek island, these boys were huge fans of Bipasha Basu. When they learnt about the dilemma, they took charge and arranged for some delicious Punjabi food like Sarson Da Saag and Makke Di Roti for everyone.

The unit at once pounced on the desi food and relished it to the fullest. Observing this, Maddy, Bipasha and the other cast members left the Greek food aside and joined the rest to relish the Indian food.

Also while shooting in Greece, Maddy, who is very fond of pickles, was very upset with his staff as they had forgotten to carry pickle from India. A sardar, who was a local junior artiste, got to know about Maddy’s love for pickle and immediately arranged some home-made achar for the actor.

Maddy was so touched by the gesture that he thanked him with a hug and also clicked pictures with his whole family.

Last heard, Maddy was so obsessed with the ‘achar’ that director Ashwini Chaudhary had to beg him to even get a taste of it.
