Last Updated 25 February 2012, 18:16 IST

The Fulbright-Nehru Scholar Exchange programme has reached a peak and India is now the largest beneficiary among US partner countries in the world with more than 17,000 fellowships and other grants awarded to Indians and Americans under it.

Disclosing this here, Jennifer McIntyre, US Consul General in Chennai, said the two countries have been partnering under this programme for more than 60 years now.

Administered by the USIEF, the Fulbright-Nehru scholarships provide participants the opportunity to “study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.”

She said the USIEF office also oversaw the new Obama-Manmohan Singh initiative, a $10 million programme co-funded equally by both countries. It targeted evolving innovative ideas “at the institutional level,” she noted.
