Two persons, including actor Fardeen Khan’s sister, were killed and three others injured in a road accident on August Kranti Marg in south Delhi early on Monday, police said.

Fardeen Khan’s sister Sonia Sethia and Mohan Kumar lost their lives and Rakesh Kumar, Keshav Sharma and 12-year-old Anjay Kumar were injured.

Sonia Sethia, 48, wife of a businessman Rajendra Sethia,  had gone to a friend’s house in Gulmohar Park for dinner on Sunday night. While on her way back home in her friend’s Honda City car, she met with the accident.

She was sitting in the rear of the car driven by Rakesh Kumar, her driver. Another employee Keshav Sharma was sitting beside Rakesh Kumar.

As soon as they reached August Kranti Marg, another car, reportedly driven at breakneck speed, banged into her car from behind.

Two persons -- father and son -- Mohan Kumar and Anjay Kumar were on the front seat of the Swift Dzire. The rear of the Honda City was totally damaged and the hood of the Swift Dzire was nowhere to be seen, police said.

“Mohan had accelerated his Swift Dzire car to breakneck speed. It made a loud bang when he rammed his car into the Honda City. The impact was so intense that the boot of the Honda car was completely damaged. The rear seat bent to almost meet the driver’s seat. Sonia, who was seated in the rear seat, was badly trapped between the two seats,” police said.

A passerby informed police around 1:15 am. All the accident victims were rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences trauma centre where doctors declared Sonia Sethia and Mohan Kumar brought dead. The others were discharged later in the day.Mohan Kumar, 50, was a senior technician at AIIMS-Rotary cancer centre.

He had gone to attend a relative’s marriage party in Gurgaon and was returning home to Aurvigyan Nagar with his younger child. Mohan’s family also learnt about the accident early in the morning.

Ashutosh, Mohan’s elder son, said, “My father never drives at high speed. We were told that an unknown vehicle had first hit my father’s car from behind. Instead of pressing the brakes, he pushed the accelerator and our car rammed into the Honda City.”

Meanwhile, police also informed Sonia’s son Sharad Lal Sethia about the incident. He later informed his father Rajendra.

Sethias’ landlady said, “Rajendra was not present in the city on Sunday. Sonia told me that her friend had invited her to a dinner. She had left around 10 pm. A call regarding the accident was received at around 5 am.”

Around 10:30 am, Fardeen Khan also rushed to AIIMS trauma centre mortuary where the body was handed over to the family after post-mortem. Khan attended Sonia’s funeral  at Lodhi Colony crematorium.
