Last Updated 29 February 2012, 20:44 IST

If things go as per plan, the New Delhi area of the national capital region would soon earn the tag of ‘Solar City’.

The ministry of new and renewable energy has given its in-principle approval to the proposal of the environment department of Delhi.

According to the ‘Solar City’ programme of the MNRE, the proposed area aiming to earn the tag should produce at least five per cent of its total energy consumption through solar energy.

“The ministry has given its in-prinicple approval for developing the NDMC area as a solar city. While the project would be taken up on a priority basis, this is just the beginning as lots of work needs to be done to make the project functional,”  Keshav Chandra, secretary (environment), Government of Delhi told Deccan Herald.

The energy efficiency and renewable energy management centre of Delhi government had sent the proposal to develop the area under New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) as solar city by tapping solar energy.

On an average, the NDMC area consumes 350 MVA per day during the summers, while it consumes 150 MVA energy per day during the winters.

“Having taken the first step, now a committee would be constituted to identify the consultant who would prepare the master plan as per the programme guidelines of the ministry.

“The consultant would prepare the proposal — indicating the terms and references, financial budget, project report containing list of buildings  which would be used for tapping solar energy — and send to the ministry for the final approval and release of funds,” a senior official of the environment department said.

In order to facilitate easy identification of consultants, the ministry has already empanelled 26 consultants for preparing the master plan for solar city. Under the programme, MNRE provides a total funds of Rs 50 lakh for each solar city. New Delhi would be the second solar city in the country after Chandigarh.
