Glass pavilion at US Museum of Art

More than 5,000 pieces of glass art are housed in the glass pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The pavilion, completed in August 2006, was designed by SANAA, the Japanese architecture firm led by Kazuyo Sejirna and Ryue Nishizawa.
The pavilion is a capacious structure made with 32,000 sq. ft. of glass and holds the Toledo Museum’s collection of glass art in an ever-changing, light-filled maze of translucence and transparency. Large panels of curved glass seem weightlessly suspended between the museum’s concrete floor and steel roof. Interior glass walls define the galleries, and the spaces between the glass walls allow ventilation.

The continuously curving building required advanced technological expertise. Its precisely bent, enormous glass panels shape a structure with no right angles, causing sound and light to travel in surprising directions. Except for opaque walls enclosing toilets, plumbing, roof drains, elevators and diagonal bracing, all exterior and interior walls are made of curved glass.

The glass in the Toledo project originated in Germany, then went to southern China, where it was curved and laminated. From there it travelled to Toledo. The installed glass is quite strong and poses little danger of shattering, as was proved by a full-scale mock-up rest.

Also completed in 2006, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, USA, features a long glass protrusion that houses its theatre. The dramatically cantilevered building offers panoramic views of Boston harbour, thanks to designs by Oilier Scofidio + Renfro and technical work by Arup Engineering.

The centre’s 325-seat theatre boasts a massive glass wall capable of instantly changing from transparent to opaque in synch with any performance on stage.
In Europe, an engineer-architect, Werner Sobek, showcased his skills with House R 128, a glass-wrapped, solar-powered house he designed for himself just outside Stuttgart, Germany. Constructed from 20 tons of glass and 12 tons of steel, the building has no definitely designed rooms and interior walls, with the exception of the bathrooms. Every element of the house can be recycled, its triple-glazed walls insulate the house so well in winter that no interior heating system is needed, says Sobek.

Architecture award for hospital

A cancer hospital forming part of a university medical centre in the United States has recently won a prestigious architecture award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. The medical centre is the University Hospital’s Case Medical Centre at Cleveland, Ohio, which is an affiliate of Case Western Reserve University. Together they form the largest centre for biomedical research in the state of Ohio.

Design, was among 66 entries selected by the Chicago Athenaeum in an architectural design competition which honours outstanding buildings designed and built in the United States.

“The wide geographic distribution of these awards attests to the importance of the programme,” said Christian K Narkiewicz-Laine, Director and President of the Chicago Athenaeum.

“There is no one single programme that brings together the latest cutting-edge international architecture today as one cohesive universal representation or platform for American design.”

Located on the Case Medical Centre campus in Cleveland, the 320,000 sq. ft. cancer hospital triples the size of the existing hospital, consolidating activities previously dispersed among seven different locations, optimising patient care and fostering synergy among providers.

“Continuity with the surrounding campus fabric, connectivity with adjacent buildings, creation of a gateway to the campus, and clear patient wayfinding were all important design considerations, as was the integration of healing gardens,” said Design Principal George Z Nikolajevich.

Clinical pods for cancer treatment are designed to address specific patient populations. Additional services include patient and public education programmes, diagnostic imaging, infusion therapy, radiation oncology, an expanded breast cancer centre, and conference facilities.
