Chhattisgarh tribal youth steal show at Senate Bhavan

Youngsters from tribal land perform as part of interactive session in city

Founder of Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) Dr R Balasubramaniam on Sunday exhorted the government to devise programmes to make tribals self-dependant.

He was speaking at an interaction organised by the Union ministry for home and youth services and sports at Senate Bhavan here as part of the ongoing fourth tribal youth exchange festival in Bangalore. Nehru Yuva Kendra in the state had been entrusted with the responsibility of co-hosting the interaction that was attended by 500 tribal youths from different states.

Balasubramaniam said there were several lacunae in the programmes planned by the state.

However, the tribals have to make use of the best among them and join the mainstream of the society, he added.

He mentioned the feat of Nataraj a tribal who is running a fair price shop in a tribal hamlet, Jayamma working as a nurse with woman and child welfare department after obtaining professional training and Kethamma who rose to decorate the seat of taluk panchayat president and member of ZP as role model to others of the tribe.

Balasubramaniam said that the interactive programmes should be organised at the tribal hamlets to facilitate tribals from other parts exchange information with locals.

It also helps the outsiders among the tribals study the woes and lifestyle of their counterparts here, he said.

MP A H Vishwanath said both the state and Centre were spending crores of rupees on welfare of tribals. It’s for the tribals to make judicious use of the funds.

Recalling his stint as a minister, Vishwanath said an exclusive sports school had been opened for tribal students to encourage budding talents.

Chamarajanagar MP R Dhruvanarayan said programmes like Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan and Arogya mission for tribals have been successfully implemented in his constituency.

Of the total population in the district, 45 per cent are tribals, he said.

Tribal youth from Chhattisgarh performed a dance from their land to the applause of the gathering.

Convener of Nehru Yuva Kendra Nataraj, chairman of Karnataka Exhibition Authority B P Manjunath, chairman of Zoo Authority of Karnataka Nanjundaswamy and others were present.
