A 22-year-old United States national of Afghan origin was stabbed to death by her fiancé in a guesthouse—Shamsher Homestay—at Jangpura in south-east Delhi on Saturday night, police said.

The 23-year-old accused from Afghanistan, Omid Milad Hussain Khill, fled the guesthouse immediately after the murder, along with his travel documents.

However, he was detained at the Indira Gandhi International Airport by immigration officials after the Delhi police had issued a lookout notice.

Engagement

The dead woman, Paimana Khanger, and Khill got engaged in Afghanistan three years ago.

Khanger lived in California along with her mother and sister and was pursuing studies. She worked as a translator. Khill is a student of Russian Language College in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Khanger seemed to be unhappy with the long distance relationship and had decided against marrying Khill. The duo decided to meet in Delhi and take a final decision about their relationship.

“Omid arrived in the capital around February 24 from Afghanistan, while Khanger arrived on February 26 from US,” said Additional Commissioner of police (south east) Ajay Chaudhry.

Omid stayed at Shamsher Homestay, while Khanger stayed at the rented accommodation of her aunt Nuriya in Jangpura. They met several times last week and Omid also visited Nuriya’s residence several times.

On Saturday, they spent the day together and went for shopping in Amar Colony and Bhogal area of south east Delhi. The duo had dinner at Nuriya’s house and later Khanger went with Omid to the guesthouse to take a shower.

“I wanted to accompany her, but she refused and asked me to join later,” said Soniya, daughter of Nuriya’s landlady, who also called the police control room.

Soniya told police that Khanger went to the guesthouse around 10 pm and asked the former to come around 11:10 pm, adding that she would call and inform her. However, when Khanger did not call, Soniya went to the guesthouse around 11:30 pm.

She opened the door of Khill’s room and saw blood on the floor, which she mistook to be a mixture of Holi colours. But upon stepping inside, she saw Khanger lying in a pool of blood.

Soniya immediately called up her mother and Khanger’s aunt Nuriya. “She was lying beside the bed and had been stabbed several times in her stomach,” she said.
The knife was fstuck in her stomach, said police who immediately issued a lookout notice for the accused.

“Omid, who was trying to leave by flight AI-243 Flight bound for Kabul, was arrested from the airport,” Chaudhry said.

In his statement to the police, Omid claimed that Paimana had broken his heart by refusing to marry him. But Khanger’s relatives claim that she was yet to take a final decision.

Police have informed the Paimana’s family in the US and have sent the body to All India Institute of Medical Sciences for postmortem.
