AIIMS students intensify protest

Demand compensation, directors resignation

The deadlock between AIIMS authorities and its students — triggered after the suicide of a first-year MBBS student continues.

A meeting between representatives of undergraduate students, senior residents, BSc and PhD students, and AIIMS authorities on Tuesday could not make a headway.

The meeting went on for several hours. Later, students marched on the campus holding candles.

They had started a hunger strike on Monday night to press their demands. At least 600 students and residents participated in the march.

“The AIIMS administration, represented by the director and senior officials, gave vague answers to all the 12 points of our memorandum. The meeting was a failure,” said Zeeshan, general secretary of the Students’ Union of Undergraduates.

The main demands of the memorandum include resignation of director Dr Ramesh C Deka and dean Rani Kumar and accepting moral responsibility for the suicide of Anil Kumar Meena, who hanged himself at a hostel room on Saturday.

Students are also demanding compensation for Meena’s family.

“The compensation should be calculated on the basis of his expected earnings till the age of 60 after finishing the course. A faculty member must visit the family and engage them in the proceedings,” said Zeeshan.

The memorandum has demanded a new committee comprising the director, dean, deputy director (administration) and other senior officials, along with members from the students’ union, Resident Doctors Association and Society of Young Scientists.

“There is a grievance cell in AIIMS. We want it to work effectively,” said Zeeshan.
AIIMS authorities could not be contacted.
