BJP's mistake benefits Cong in Mangalore

Last Updated 07 March 2012, 18:02 IST

The BJP, in spite of having a majority in the City Municipal Council in Mangalore, failed to make its candidate the Mangalore Mayor on Wednesday.

A mistake committed by BJP candidate Roopa D Bangera while filing nomination papers, made her lose the post to the Congress candidate, Gulzar Baanu, who was unanimously elected as the 26th Mayor of the City. The BJP had to be content with the deputy mayor’s post.

Bangera had not submitted the caste certificate in the prescribed format while filing the nomination papers. Hence, Election Officer M V Jayanti rejected her application. Bangera had submitted the caste certificate during the scrutiny of the nomination papers. Luck was on the side of Gulzar Baanu, as the BJP had not fielded any ‘dummy’ candidate.
