The criticism was that if the chief minister’s family had vested interests in the Krishna waters how could he be expected to fight for the state’s share. Anil Kumar, who owns the SRSEPL hydel power plant near Gugul village in Karnataka, however, denied the allegations.

Another controversy revolved around YSR’s close ties with Karnataka’s BJP MLC G Janardhan Reddy, who reportedly bagged leases worth crores of rupees from the AP government for his Obulapuram mines in Anantapur district. YSR’s son Y S Jaganmohan Reddy too has several business interests in Karnataka.

When this reporter, during an interview before he became CM in 2004, asked YSR about his emotional attachment to Karnataka and Bangalore, he admitted to nurturing a special sentiment for them.
