Last Updated 09 March 2012, 18:37 IST

An after-effect of the humiliation in the UP Assembly poll, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi on Friday met party president Sonia Gandhi and offered to resign, owning moral responsibility for poll debacle.

Addressing the media after meeting Gandhi, Joshi said she has taken responsibility for the party’s dismal performance and offered to step down.

The Congress president, who had noted wrong selection of candidates and too many leaders as the major factors behind the Congress’ decimation in the state, is yet to take a decision on Joshi’s resignation.

On the party’s dismal show in UP,  Joshi said party leaders will analyse the debacle.
Digvijay Singh, Congress general secretary, in-charge of party affairs in Uttar Pradesh had also offered to resign.

Singh evaded queries on the issue after his meeting with Sonia Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi, who campaigned aggressively to revive the Congress’ fortune in UP, has already accepted responsibility for the party's poor performance.
