Hindu college principal resigns

Last Updated 10 March 2012, 20:44 IST

The principal of Hindu College, Delhi University resigned on Saturday as he could not get a leave extension, said sources.

Dr Vinay Kumar Srivastava was on leave and requested for an extension from DU authorities but they denied because leaves are apparently not granted at the beginning of the year.

DU's governing body had recently raised concerns over delay in forming the time table for different classes in Hindu College.

DU's Vice Chancellor normally sends notices to principals who remain absent from college for a long period. Notices were sent to some college principals at the beginning of this year as well.

DU Teachers' Association members say Srivastava was demoted to the post of professor of Anthropology in Hindu College.

However, Usha Rao, DU's proctor denies that Srivastava has resigned. “His term has got over. He has not resigned from his post,” said Rao.

S D Siddique, secretary DU Teachers' Association said though authorities say Srivastava's tenure has ended, suspicion remains. “Srivastava has been asked to continue teaching but we cannot say for sure whether his term has ended or he has resigned.

He was pulled up for being on leave for too long. Even Kirori Mal College's principal (Bhim Sen Singh) has been asked to leave till an enquiry to ascertain his role in teachers' agitation to defy semesters is complete. The governing body is planning to suspend Rajendra Prasad, principal of Ramjas College soon,” he said.
