The Delhi High Court has let off a businessman, who was sentenced to a year in jail for mowing down a man under his car 15 years ago. He spent 15 days in jails and paid Rs 8 lakh as damages to the victim’s family members.

Justice Suresh Kait gave the verdict on Defence Colony resident and convict Rajiv Chopra’s plea. He had challenged his jail term, which was later modified to nine months by an Additional Sessions Judge on January 20 this year.

“While maintaining the conviction of Chopra, the order on sentence dated September 17, 2011, passed by the trial court has been modified to the extent of period already undergone by him from January 20 to February 4 this year,” said Justice Suresh Kait in a recent order.

The court passed the order after the victim’s parents  agreed to accept the compensation of Rs 8 lakh from Chopra. A magisterial court had sentenced Chopra to a year in jail for mowing down a 28-year-old man under his car in 1997.
